Kansas City police on hunt for suspect in series of highway shootings (VIDEO)
Kansas City Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Kansas City, Missouri, are now investigating 20 highway shootings between March 8 and April 6, but the number of reported incidents continues to fluctuate as the investigation persists.
Seventeen incidents have occurred in Kansas City, specifically the Grandview Triangle area, while others took place in the nearby towns of Blue Springs and Lee’s Summit, and about 150 miles south in Leawood, Fox 4-KC reports.
Three people were struck during an incident, but did not sustain life threatening injuries. In the other incidents, a bullet just struck the car, Kansas City police said in a statement.
According to police the details of every shooting are similar: the gunman drives next to the intended victim and opens fire before veering off on the nearest highway exit.
“It appears these vehicles are being shot at from probably another vehicles that’s on the road,’ Kansas City Police Capt. Tye Grant told Fox 4-KC.
Additionally, police were quick to dismiss the idea that the gunman or gunmen are targeting specific drivers.
Leawood police described the suspect as wearing a ski mask and sunglasses, and driving a metallic green sedan.
However, Kansas City police have yet to release a description of the suspect or vehicle because victims and witnesses have provided inconsistent statements, so police do not want to provide misinformation, nor do they want the public to focus too closely on a specific type of vehicle or person.
Police are increasing their presence in the areas of the shootings and ask residents to be vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity.
A reward of up to $7,000 now is available for information leading to an arrest in this case. Anyone with information should call 816-474-TIPS (8477).
