Pope Francis Communicates with His 13 Million Twitter Followers
Pope Francis’s official Twitter account (@pontifex) has reached 13 million followers in nine languages.
The pontiff has 13,005,370 followers on the social-networking site, with the majority of them in Spanish.
The pope’s Spanish feed (@pontifex_es) is the most popular on the social network, with 5,415,627 followers.
Pope Francis has 3,914,595 followers in English, 1,647,119 in Italian, 1,011,390 in Portuguese, 259,042 in French, 236,808 in Latin, 215,082 in Polish, 183,363 in German and 122,344 in Arabic.
The pontiff continues to be one of the most followed people on the microblogging network.
Pope Francis has discussed the power and dangers of the digital world on several occasions.
The pope said during a Jan. 23 appearance at the Vatican that social networks carried the danger of “exclusion” and “manipulation.”
The pontiff’s predecessor, Benedict XVI, opened the Twitter account on Dec. 12, 2012.
Benedict XVI had 3 million Twitter followers when he announced that he was retiring on Feb. 28, 2013.
No messages were posted on the account from the time Benedict XVI retired and the election of Francis on March 13.
New papal posts finally appeared on March 17.
