A magnitude-5.9 earthquake rattled southern Mexico early Saturday and was also felt in this capital, but no casualities or serious damage were initially reported.
The temblor struck at 2:36 a.m. at a depth of five kilometers (3.1 miles) and was centered 38 kilometers (23 miles) southwest of the southern town of Tecpan, near Mexico’s Pacific coast, the National Seismological Service, or SSN, said.
The SSN initially said the quake was magnitude-6.3 but it lowered that reading in a subsequent bulletin.
Saturday’s temblor was apparently a strong aftershock of the magnitude-6.4 earthquake that caused minor damage and frayed nerves – but left no casualities – when it shook Mexico on Thursday.
Government Secretary Miguel Angel Osorio Chong tweeted a half hour after Saturday’s quake that there were no reports of damage in the areas where it was felt.
Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera, for his part, said on Twitter that an initial inspection showed the earthquake had not caused “significant damage.”
He said only that one person needed assistance because he had been trapped in an elevator.
Mexico City’s international airport was operating normally.
