In what might be the most underreported story of the year, the CEO of the Hawaiian Affairs Office (OHA) been rallying massive public support in his proposed challenge to the United States government over their claim to Hawaii as a state. The challenge argues that the Kingdom of Hawaii still exists as a sovereign country.
The letter that Kamanaopono Crabbe wrote to US Secretary of State John Kerry sparked an internal crisis. Crabbe’s letter formally asked for a ruling on whether the Kingdom of Hawaii still legally exists.
The letter, however, was quickly rescinded by the OHA’s trustees, after the US Government acknowledgment that the overthrow of the kingdom in 1893 was illegal.
With that acknowledgement, the Unite States government might have painted itself into a corner. In fact, Political scientist Dr Keanu Sai, from Windward Community College in Honolulu, explained to local Pacific Beat the rescinding of the letter was itself later withdrawn. The OHA board thought Dr Crabbe had violated their policy by sending the letter without approval, but later realized they were mistaken.
“[Dr Crabbe] was not in violation of any policy of the board but rather was operating on his diligence and risk management,” Dr Sai explained.
Now Crabbe’s proposal has the full support of the OHA trustees, and they have moved to send the letter again and retain Crabbe in his role as CEO.
“They’re in full support and they say that his questions definitely do have merit.”
Now Crabbe’s campaign is growing in public support as well, with thousands signing an online petition. MOREHERE
