UEFA Sanctions Real Madrid for Fans’ Racism During Match
Real Madrid faces punishment for racist conduct by fans during an April 23 Champions League match between the Blancos and Bayern Munich, UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, announced Friday.
“The Control and Disciplinary Body has ordered the partial closure of the Santiago Bernabeu for one match. More specifically, sectors 120 and 122 of the stadium will be closed for the club’s next UEFA competition home game,” UEFA said.
“Real Madrid are obliged to display a banner with the wording ‘No to Racism’ in those sectors” during the Blancos’ first home group-stage clash of the 2014-2015 Champions League competition, the statement said.
The Blancos won their 10th Champions League title last Saturday, beating crosstown rival Atletico Madrid 4-1 in the first European final between two clubs from the same city.
While the sanction announcement did not describe the offensive conduct, UEFA sources told EFE that a banner with Nazi emblems was spotted in the stands at the Bernabeu during the April 23 contest with the German club.
“All forms of racist behavior are considered serious offenses against the disciplinary regulations and are severely punished,” UEFA said. “Following the entry into force of the new disciplinary regulations on 1 June 2013, the fight against racist conduct has been stepped up – resulting in tougher sanctions to deter any such behavior.”
