“The WWII Story They Don’t Teach You In School” is a short video chronicling the story of Operation Mincemeat: the single greatest act of deception during the War.
In 1943, Lt. Cmdr. Ewen Montagu and Flight Lt. Charles Cholmondeley devised a plan to deceive the Germans into believing the coming invasion would take place in Greece and Sardinia, not Sicily.
The plan included creating an elaborate backstory around a plane-crashed British soldier carrying secret documents. The body was allowed to wash ashore and when the Germans discovered the body, they bought the deception hook, line, and sinker.
Operation Mincemeat effectively routed the Germans away from Sicily and helped seal the fate of the War.
