A baby just one-and a-half months old died after being kept 11 days in a pediatric hospital in the northern Dominican city of Santiago with symptoms of the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus, his family said Saturday.
The child had been taken to the medical center with a high fever and signs of allergy all over his body.
The baby boy died Friday night, the family told the local press. They had been told he showed symptoms of chikungunya.
Though the baby’s parents say his death was supposedly due to the virus that causes that disease, neither the Arturo Grullon Hospital nor local authorities have yet confirmed it.
In the city of Santiago and others in the north, cases of the disease are on the rise and the Public Health Ministry has carried out several preventive operations in districts where chikungunya is affecting the population.
