Brazil Falls Short Against Netherlands for Third Place

The Netherlands national team came in third in the 2014 World Cup with a 3-0 win over the Brazil squad, which was jeered out of Brasilia’s Mane Garrincha Stadium by the home team’s disillusioned fans.

Robin Van Persie in the 3rd minute cashed in on a penalty committed by Thiago Silva against Arjen Robben and put coach Louis Van Gaal’s team ahead early on, while Daley Blind, 14 minutes later, widened the gap to 2-0 and from then on it was no contest.

Georginio Wijnaldum, in the 91st minute, slammed the third goal into the net for the Netherlands, which in the 93rd minute brought in its third goalkeeper of the game, Michel Vorm, the only team member who had not played a minute on the field during the entire World Cup.

As for Brazil’s dismal adieu, midfielder Ramires said that the team completely lost its way in the crushing 7-1 loss to Germany on July 8 and that it never recovered, as seen by the 3-0 pummeling it took from the Netherlands.

“We’re halfway lost,” the midfielder said after the match that left the Netherlands in third place in the World Cup and the host country’s squad in fourth.

Meanwhile Brazilian police detained Saturday, the day before the World Cup final, 19 members of groups organizing protests against the soccer championship and who are suspected of having taken part in acts of violence, officials said.

Groups that criticize how much money the government has lavished on organizing the World Cup have programmed demonstrations for Sunday in different cities, two of them in a plaza next to Maracana Stadium where Argentina and Germany will fight it out for the championship.
