Three police officers were arrested in connection with last weekend’s murder of two women at a restaurant on Tegucigalpa’s south side, Honduran authorities said Friday.
National Police director Ramon Sabillon told reporters that those in custody are active agents of the force’s DNSEI investigative unit.
Fredy Mendoza Arriaza, Gregorio Anariba Meraz and Marvin Gallego Suarez were handed over to the Attorney General’s Office, the police chief said, without giving details of their arrest.
The murders of the two women occurred last Sunday at a restaurant in the Loarque suburb, an attack that left another woman wounded.
Sabillon said that “these incidents are painful, but we’re not going to stop strengthening the National Police.”
Since 2011 Honduran cops have been accused of corruption, drug trafficking, car theft and violations of human rights including murder.
Official figures show that a woman is slain every 13 hours in Honduras, a country with one of the highest homicide rates in the world, with a current average of 15 deaths every day.
“At 90.4 homicides per 100,000 people, Honduras remains the most violent country in the world,” the Assessment Capacities Project, said in a report released last month.
