1.3 Tons of Cocaine Seized in Colombia

Colombian police announced the seizure of 1.3 tons of cocaine found in a cargo container aboard an outbound ship in the Pacific port of Buenaventura.

The drugs were concealed in a shipment of ceramic glue, the head of the narcotics division, Gen. Ricardo Alberto Restrepo Londoño, said, adding that no arrests had been made.

The cocaine consignment, which was aboard a ship bound for the Guatemalan port of Quetzal, belonged to Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa cartel, the general said.

Operatives of the Sinaloa cartel are on the ground in Colombia, according to Restrepo, who said the Mexican outfit has decided to bypass intermediaries and buy cocaine directly from producers as a way of boosting profit margins.

“We are facing criminal organizations coming from Mexico,” he said.

Colombian police have confiscated a total of 68.3 tons of cocaine so far this year.

President Juan Manuel Santos last year ordered police and prosecutors to investigate the possible presence of Mexican traffickers in the southern Pacific province of Nariño, where much of Colombia’s coca – the raw material of cocaine – is grown.
