Judge Rules Shakira’s “Loca” was Illegally Copied From Dominican

A federal judge in New York has ruled that Colombian singer Shakira’s 2010 hit “Loca” was illegally copied from a song by Dominican songwriter Ramon Arias Vazquez, whose author rights are owned by Mayimba Music.

Judge Alvin Hellerstein said both “Loca” and Dominican musician Edward “El Cata” Bello Pou’s “Loca con su tiger,” which inspired it , were copied from Arias Vazquez’s earlier song.

“I find that, since Bello had copied Arias, whoever wrote Shakira’s version of the song also indirectly copied Arias,” the judge said.

Hellerstein ordered the parties to negotiate and present the court with a joint agreement before noon on Aug. 29 covering compensation for Mayimba Music.

The judge’s ruling, dated Aug. 19, ordered attorneys for Mayimba and Sony Music to appear in court on Sept. 8 to argue other points in the case.

“Loca,” which features a merengue pop sound, was the first single released from Shakira’s 2010 album “Sale el Sol,” which topped radio play lists in Latin America, Europe and the United States.
