Over 3,000 Dominicans Displaced by Heavy Rains and Flooding
At least 3,603 people have been displaced, 606 homes damaged or destroyed and 23 communities cut off as a result of intense rains over the past two days in the Dominican Republic, emergency authorities said Sunday.
The rain caused flooding throughout the eastern and northeastern portions of the country, the COE emergency operations committee reported, adding that two bridges, an electrical substation and a hospital had been damaged.
Authorities have declared an alert in 18 of the country’s 32 provinces, with the most heavily affected being San Pedro de Macoris in the east, where floodwaters have cut the land connections with several towns and destroyed dozens of homes.
The COE added that all the displaced people are being housed in the homes of friends and relatives and that it is expected that the rains will begin to let up on Sunday, although the risk of flooding remains because of the abnormally intense rainfall.
In San Pedro de Macoris, the Soco River overflowed in the town of Ramon Santana, blocking passage across the La Base bridge and cutting off the villages of Cabeza de Toro, Lima, Concho Primo, and Atilano 1 and 2.
The rains also damaged dozens of homes in residential sections of the city of San Pedro de Macoris, as well as in the neighboring provinces of El Seibo and Hato Mayor.
Authorities announced that three people, including a 10-year-old boy were rescued in the town of Pedro Brand, in Santo Domingo province, after their SUV was swept away by the surging waters of the Isabela River as they were trying to cross it.
Meanwhile, in southeastern Monte Plata province, the Ozama River overflowed and completely flooded the community of Mata Los Indios.
