Binmen have been ordered to stop collecting rubbish from homes with long driveways over fears they could hurt themselves pulling bins to their lorry.
Council officers issued the warning binmen in the Yorkshire Dales after health and safety chiefs asked for a risk assessment to be carried out.
Last night a council meeting upheld the decision, meaning from today residents will have to leave their bins at the end of their driveway, or face have rubbish left behind on collection day.
Around 64,000 people depend on Craven District Council to empty their bins and 20 per cent are expected to be affected by the changes.
Councillor Paul English branded the move ‘crazy’ saying it was ‘health and safety gone mad’.
He said: ‘When you apply to be a refuse collector it is pretty obvious you will be expected to collect refuse. It is kind of part of the job description.
