Over the past ten year, the number of gangs has averaged around 27,000 in the United States. Since 2012, studies have found that there was even a steady increase in the number of gangs. It’s very unfortunate that gang violence remains one of the biggest social problems in the country; second to only gun violence.
Where can you find gangs? Don’t go looking for trouble. They are everywhere! In New York, in Baltimore, in Washington D.C., in Louisiana, in Illinois, to name a few. The list is quite extensive. Larger cities and suburban countries remain the primary locations of gangs; 2/3s of gangs are located in this area. Smaller cities account for just 27% , while rural countries account for just 5%.
Here are ten of the most violent gangs that continue to plague the United States. It will require more than just a single police force to take these groups down.
Also known as American Mafia, this high profile crime group is an offspring of the Sicilian Mafia. It finds its roots in New York’s lower east side with the start of Italian immigration to the United States. Although the media usually refers to the group as the “mafia” neither the Sicilian nor American Mafias have any formal name for themselves and simply refer to themselves as “cosa nostra” meaning ‘our thing’, if translated from Italian. Known for its ruthless code of conduct, if a member breaks any rules the punishment is almost always death, and usually it is executed by those closest to the offender.
In 2011, federal agents arrested 119 alleged members of La Cosa Nostra (this thing of ours) Sicilian Mafia in late-January raids in the Northeast. This was a big blow against the Mob, but it was not a fatal blow. For years, the reports that suggested that the Mafia in America was dead have been greatly exaggerated. The LCN had attempted to remain out of the public eye after the much publicized convictions related to John “Dapper Don” Gotti in 1990.
As one of the biggest Chicano gang groups in the world, it is also a bitter rival of its fellow adversaries in the Mexican Mafia. In fact, La Nuestra Familia is said to have started when a member of La eMe stole another Latino member’s pair of shoes. This gang is known for requiring extremely strict allegiance and it takes two years to be admitted. Once in, though, there’s no way to go back, except in a coffin. In 2013, it was announced that 48 members of the Nuestra Familia were indicted on 77 felony charges ranging from drug dealing to murder.
The Black Dragons is a Chinese/American Triad (secret society) and street gang that was formed in 1980 by Chinese immigrants in Los Angeles, California. It was founded by a group of men who bonded together to protect themselves from other Asian and Hispanic adversarial groups. The Black Dragons operated in Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley for over two decades. At the gang’s peak, it had over 100 core members. The gang preyed on the Asian American communities as a source of income and is highly unique compared to other groups as they are involved in both organized and street-level crime. The revenue from organized crime came mainly from extorting brothels, prostitution, money laundering, the distribution of narcotics and counterfeiting merchandise. At street-level, the gang was involved in a wide range of crimes that included, murder, robbery and car theft.
Mongols are mostly located in Southern California. They also have members in 14 other states as well as in Mexico, Australia, and other parts of Europe. It was founded as an alternative gang for guys who were didn’t want membership with the Hells Angels due to their race. They somewhat resemble their more popular counterpart, with members spread across the U.S. and chapters overseas. They specialize in the same criminal activities, including extortion and drug dealing, along with any other activity that has potential to be lucrative. Infamously, in 2002, the two gangs engaged in a fight in Nevada in which a Mongol and two Hells Angels were killed. In recent years, the FBI has cracked down on the gang. In 2008, for example, Operation Black Rain ended with the apprehension of 38 members.
Texas Syndicate is a California State Prison gang founded in response to adversary Californian gangs like the Mexican Mafia and the Aryan Brotherhood. Because these gangs were killing off inmates, especially those in Texas, prisoners saw a need to have an adversarial gang to protect these Texas prisoners. The Texas Syndicates don’t allow any members that are outside of theHispanic race. Caucasian members are the biggest scums of the earth, according to the gang philosophy. The gang is made up generally of Mexican immigrant prisoners, not Mexicans who were born and raised in the U.S. In 2000, the gang was said to comprise of 1,000 members in jail, and about 830 in freedom. Texas Syndicate is also capable of contract murder, gambling, prostitution, extortion, and drug trafficking. Many of the gang’s leaders are imprisoned due to drug charges.
