The Maldive Islands consist of about 1200 islands in the Indian Ocean–Arabian Sea area. The area is best known for its postcard-perfect scenery and high-end resorts. Sadly, this is quickly changing as several uninhabited islands in the Maldives are now being filled with trash. This includes the massive man-made island landfill called “Trash Island”, which seeps extreme amounts of plastic debris into the ocean. Man’s imprint on the gentle ecosystems of the Maldives, which is home to over 2000 species of ocean life, will certainly not go unnoticed.
