Back in the early 1980’s, the American government had grown tired of the repeated technology thefts being perpetrated against it by Soviet spies. These thefts had grown in number during the Carter years, and the Reagan boys decided enough was enough. What they then did was a real life version of what one might think could only have been created in a Hollywood movie. In fact, Hollywood did unintentionally showcase a version of this many years later in the film Live Free or Die Hard when the villain of that movie decided to blow up a series of natural gas pipelines. The Reagan CIA actually pulled that very thing off against the Soviets, and did so in a spectacularly successful manner that has become something of a legend within the CIA.

Here’s what happened…

The Reagan CIA discovered the Soviets were stealing, among other things, much of the natural gas pipeline technology in America to then be used to update their own natural gas transport system in the Soviet Union. The Reagan intelligence apparatus knew that energy was to be one of the means by which the United States might eventually defeat the Soviets and so decided something had to be done about the repeated theft of energy technology.

So, they created a gas pipeline software  “logic bomb” that was purposely left to be found by Soviet spies. This logic bomb was an ingenious computer code designed to run undetected for ten million cycles – a number that would make the Soviets believe the code was working as it should.
