Barack Obama has his own reasons for continuing to contemptuously disregard Israel’s concerns regarding a nuclear Iran —- which presents a global threat that should concern us all. The rift between President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reached epic proportions leading up to Netanyahu’s address to Congress this morning.
On Monday, Netanyahu downplayed their increasingly strained relationship, but said he has a “moral obligation” to speak out against a deal with Iran that potentially threatens Israel’s existence.
Much to Obama’s consternation the Prime Minister was invited to address the joint session by House Speaker John Boehner. Dozens of Democrats including Arizona’s CD 3 U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva are boycotting the speech. Although no members of the Obama administration attended the event, Netanyahu was interrupted by applause 41 times.
Further sticking his finger in the Prime Minister’s eye, Obama announced he had scheduled a conference call on the crisis in Ukraine to coincide with the timing of the speech.
Still gracious while underscoring Israel’s right to defend itself, Netanyahu said, “My speech is not intended to show any disrespect to President Obama or the esteemed office that he holds. I have great respect for both. But while American leaders worry about the security of their country, Israeli leaders worry about the survival of their country.”
Netanyahu charged that Iran’s “goons in Gaza, its lackeys in Lebanon and the Revolutionary Guard in the Golan Heights” act as its proxies. Iran’s ‘global terror network’ poses a threat with ‘tentacles of terror region throughout the region.”
GOP Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) summed up the speech using these words, “Today, Prime Minister Netanyahu asked for America’s unwavering support for Israel, our friend and ally in a tumultuous region,” adding, “It’s unfortunate the Prime Minister even had to ask.” Burr is the son of a Methodist minister.
Fifty Democrats —- 42 House and 7 Senate members joined by VP Joe Biden, shamefully boycotted Netanyahu’s address. Many will remember Democrats at their own 2012 national Convention booing the addition of God and Jeering the mention of Jerusalem in their party platform. It’s in their genes.
