Being a liberal Zionist was always a tough thing to pull off, but it is becoming increasingly just impossible. The effort seems to have driven The New York Times‘ Tom Friedman bonkers.
Around 2000, I used to read Tom Friedman in the NYT quite frequently. It was one of the ‘still acceptable’ columnists that you could stand to read, seemed smart, well-traveled, and seemed to actually have common sense. He hadn’t taken the ‘Obama slow-boat to Progessive Socialist Liberalville’ yet.
HOWEVER, this also is the ‘canary-in-a-coal-mine’ I was waiting for, and that was to see someone from years back, who was a true moderate or even conservative, who seemed to have sense, who suddenly (or without media attention), went from ‘decent and acceptable’ to ‘screaming nutjob liberal’.
With Friedman, I think you are seeing what I call ‘a saturation point’ conversion. I think he was so surrounded, for so long, by those of the ‘Liberal Kommunist’ mindset, that he has, without possibly even himself noticing it, merged from that ‘moderate’ lane into the insanity hard-left lane over the years. I’m just not sure. I don’t think he was directly ‘paid off’ to be like he is now, unless you count his paycheck forcing him to stay surrounded (and most likely, silent) by the preponderance of liberals at the NYT.
Sad to see someone with that much common sense roll over and have his eyes glaze over in front of you.
