(Before It's News)

Here are top 10 things we didn’t know about our body. Raise your hand if your learned a fact or two they didn’t teach you in science class:

10. Height Changes

Did you know that we change height based on the time of the day. On average, we are 1 in. tallerwhen we wake up in the morning. That is because excess fluid builds up when we sleep inside our spinal discs. The stress of standing in a day causes the fluid to seep out, making you lose height as a result.

9. Human Bones

When it comes to bones in our body, our bones might snap easily enough but when it comes to supporting weight, we’re almost uncontested. Just one tiny matchbox sized piece of bone can support 9+ tonnes of weight. To put this fact into perspective, a concrete supports 4 times less weight than bones without crumbling.

8. Tickling

Have you ever tried tickling yourself? Does not really work, does it? The reason why is because your brain actually anticipates the sensation. It discards expected ones and alerts you to the unexpected ones, hence why you may not be ticklish by your own doing. Someone tickling you is the same thing as something that helps dull the feelings from your fingertips unless you are actively thinking about it or touching something strange.

7. Brain

While many people feel they get smarter as they get older, the reality is that you’re actually losing intelligence as you age. Every day you are losing more than 1000 brain cells since your brain is working continuously even when you’re sleeping or watching television. When you wake up, your brain is in a crunch time, working hard to replenish your daytime functions to peak efficiency.

6. Nostril Breathing

You might never think about it, but breathing through your nose is quite complex and the effects are intense. 85% of people breathe through one nostril at a time. The other nostril gets subconsciously blocked by tissue swelling. This you might notice when you cannot unclog one nostril even though there is nothing blocking the airway. As well, breathing nostrils sends messages to your brain – breathing through the right nostril activates the logical side of your brain, while the left makes you more creative.

5. Heart

The normal adult heart beats 72 times a minute; 100,000 times a day. That is 3,600,000 times each year and approximately 2.5 billion times through a lifetime.
