The first warning shot has been fired across the bow toward Rand Paul by elitist neocon warmongers today, as the anti-establishment Senator is set to make official his 2016 Presidential run.

While Paul will announce he is running for President at 11.30 am EST, an establishment Republican front group is set to plough $1 million into a slanderous advertising campaign designed to depict Paul as ‘dangerous’ and ‘standing with Obama’.

The ad is being run by the Foundation for a Secure and Prosperous America, a self described “Social Welfare Organization” about which little is known because it is not mandated to reveal its donors.

According to Sourcewatch, the group was founded in 2008, specifically to receive donations for John McCain’s hawkish presidential campaign “as much as possible up to the limits of the law,”

As The New York Times reports, the group is headed by Rick Reed, a strategist who was part of the ‘Swiftboat Veterans for Truth’ against John Kerry during the 2004 presidential campaign.

The 30-second ad itself, focuses on comments Rand Paul previously made when he declared that Iran doesn’t pose a real national security threat to the United States. It attempts to tie Paul directly with Barack Obama on foreign policy by making slanderous and inaccurate accusations.

“Rand Paul is standing with him,” and “Rand Paul supports Obama’s negotiations” are statements made in the spot.

“Rand Paul is wrong and dangerous,” the voice over says. “Tell him to stop siding with Obama.”

The fearmongering ad concludes with images of civil unrest and a mushroom cloud, as the ominous voice over states “One Iranian bomb would be a disaster.”

“Sen. Paul supports Obama’s reckless negotiations with Iran, stands against new sanctions that would hold the regime accountable, and says it’s crazy to think Iran is a threat to our national security,” said Lisa Boothe, a spokeswoman for the neocon group.

Unsurprisingly, the ad takes Paul’s comments wildly out of context. Paul made them in 2007, before he was even a Senator, and while George W. Bush was still president. Clearly, Iran was less of a threat 8 years ago. Indeed, Paul was citing comments made by intelligence and military officials from the Bush administration.

Breitbart uncovered the full audio, which highlights just how out of context the sound bite featured in the attack ad is.

Most of the money slated for the ad, $300,000, will go to Fox News. Digital versions of the ad will also run 80-100 times per day in the early primary states.

The New York Times report suggests that the neocon group is attacking Paul because he “has been viewed with deep concern by foreign policy hawks for his noninterventionist views.”

Paul’s campaign team responded to the attack, telling Breitbart News “The only reason people are going after Sen. Paul is because they are threatened and worried about how well his message has resonated across party lines.”

“Sen. Paul will be the only one who can defeat the Washington machine and unleash the American dream.” Sergio Gor, Paul’s communications director said.

Regarding Iran, Gor also told Bloomberg News that “Senator Paul will be watching closely and believes any deal must make clear Iran cannot acquire a nuclear weapon, allows for full verification and is approved by Congress.”

The attacks on Paul will not end here. Establishment Democrats are also lining up an attack, with DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz scheduled to speak about Paul on a press call late Tuesday morning.
