Thanks to his dedication to smoking and promoting cannabis, Wille Nelson has become one of the most notable celebrity faces attached to the marijuana movement.
The 81-year-old country star and black belt who still smokes marijuana daily also recently launched his own cannabis-centric brand and has maintained his status as a cult stoner figure. But it wasn’t always a bag of fun joints for Willie, who didn’t even smoke weed until he had been married once and was in his 20s.
Before that, as forthcoming memoir It’s a Long Story details, Willie was actually hesitant to smoke cannabis thanks to the Reefer Madness propaganda that proliferated his era:
“I was a hick from Abbott. I’d seen [the marijuana scare film]‘Reefer Madness,’ and I was a little worried that a little pot might get me crazy. Wasn’t I crazy enough?”
“Booze emboldened me. Brought out the fighter. And on more occasions than I wish to remember, the fighter picked on guys bigger than him,” he writes. “More often than not I got the s – – t kicked out of me. Booze did nothing to improve my dexterity or my judgment in provoking an opponent.”
More proof that cannabis is insanely safer than alcohol.
When he tried pot for the first time, he smoked it like a cigarette, leading a friend to say, “No, you dumb son of a bitch. You don’t treat it like no Lucky Strike. You hold in the f – – kin’ smoke.” He initially stuck to cigarettes and drink, since, “I was too young and dumb to see the harm they were doing.” [New York Post]
Now, Willie’s life has literally gone to pot–in the best of ways.
