The checkpoints aren’t on the border because they’re looking for Americans holding drugs. The federales can get money out of them. They can’t get any money out of poor Mexicans and besides, the drug cartels have already paid their way into the country.
Just answer the question, are you a US citizen, say yes, and they will let you go. If they try to send you to secondary inspection, then put up a fuss.
