Female Rangers moving right along
161 soldiers enrolled in the Ranger course at Fort Benning, Georgia, completed the Darby phase July 11 and are now moving on to the Mountain phase portion of the course. And of those soldiers, three are women, required to meet the same physical demands as their male counterparts.
The Mountain phase is made up of 19 days of training that consists of four days each of military mountaineering and techniques training, followed by 10 days of patrols and one day where soldiers receive performance-specific counseling. Those who complete the Mountain phase will move on to the Florida phase on August 1.
As part of an effort known as Soldier 2020, for the first time in history, the U.S. Army allowed 19 women to enroll in the Ranger course in April. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno remains positive about the performance of the females remaining in the course.
