Why Bill Nye Should Reconsider His Stance on GMOs
The darling of every science nerd from the 90’s was once very concerned about genetically modified food, and said as much in a book he wrote in 2014. However, earlier this year he visited a Monsanto lab where they do the gene modification for their produce, and changed his mind on the issue. Now he’s a staunch advocate for GMOs, and has provided some rather counter-intuitive advice for Monsanto.
In a recent interview with Niel Degrasse Tyson, he suggested that genetically modified food should be labelled, but not as a warning. It should be a part of their overall marketing strategy, where they could tout the benefits of GMOs, including their affordability and (supposedly) better nutritional content. “I told those people at Monsanto … I told them, why don’t you just put on there ‘proudly GMO?’ Go for it. … Let the market sort it out.” However, the timing of his suggestion has coincided with a very telling piece of legislation.
The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act just passed in The House, with 275 representatives in favor, and 150 against. This bill would prevent states from creating mandatory GMO labeling laws. I wonder if Monsanto’s lobbyists had anything to do with this bill? They’re obviously afraid of honest food labeling. Is there something they don’t want the public to know about their “food?” Maybe Bill Nye should talk to Monsanto about the fact that they don’t serve GMO food to their employees, before he issues his support for these products.
