Gun Running State Senator Pleads Guilty to Racketeering Charges
State legislator Leland Yee was once a highly respected politician in San Francisco, and was well-known for his stance on violent video games and gun control. He was even honored by the Brady Campaign for his anti-gun efforts. But after losing a mayoral election for San Francisco, he decided to raise some funds in the most hypocritical way a politician with his reputation could.
In March of 2014, he was arrested for attempting to buy firearms and shoulder mounted missiles from extremists in the Philippines, and trying to sell them to an undercover FBI agent. He also stands accused for accepting $62,000 in campaign contributions in exchange for legislative favors. Charges of racketeering were added later, after it was found that he tried to extort money from an as yet unnamed NFL team, in exchange for voting for a bill that would favor team owners. Initially, he plead not-guilty on these charges, and was placed on paid suspension until his term concluded.
But now Yee has pleaded guilty to the racketeering charge, and may face up to 20 years in prison, and up to $250,000 in fines for that alone. It’s yet to be seen how he will be sentenced for the gun trafficking charges. It wouldn’t be surprising for a politician of his caliber to escape justice. But no matter how it all turns out, Yee will likely go down as the most hypocritical poster child of the anti-gun movement.
