Too many people today are living in a fictional past – in Sheriff Andy Taylor’s Mayberry or George Bailey’s Bedford Falls where cops were once just people. Some sigh nostalgically by describing a bad cop as “just one bad apple in a barrel full of good apples,” conveniently and dangerously forgetting the ugly reality that, “Given the right conditions and enough time, one apple can push all the fruit around it to ripen – and eventually rot.”

Today the right conditions and enough time have come; we are clearly living in a police state. That means it’s time for everyone to end the fruitless commentary over the terms “good cops” and “bad cops.” Cops must always be judged the same way as everyone else, by what they actually do rather than by the “good” and “bad” labels we frequently paste on them.

People need to learn that the “good” cops and the “bad” cops are all too often the same cops. The cop that saves a child from drowning this morning may be taking bribes from sex traffickers tonight. And their partners who know it and don’t report it, along with department officials and union reps who excuse it and covers it up, are just as bad for what they do.police state graph

Blindly loving and blindly hating anyone for anything is equally blind. Even the most ardently embittered cop-hater will embrace the one who jumps in an saves his life, and even the most dedicated “Back the Blue” supporter will despise the one who pepper sprays him in the face simply because he feels like it.

The libertarian solution is both simple and moral:

  1. Understand what “Victimless Crime” really means (noun; a legal offense, as prostitution or gambling, to which all participating parties have consented)
  2. Immediately abolish all victimless crimes
  3. Pardon everyone currently imprisoned for victimless crimes
  4. Prosecute everyone attempting to create or enforce a victimless crime

Politically and socially cops are not “authorized” to have morals or a conscience. They are ordered to enforce whatever laws some politician demands that they enforce. It means they’re not people anymore; they’re just trained junkyard dogs.

The first step is for the police themselves to rebel against their masters and rejoin humanity. In the meantime, no matter how much you would love to hold a “Hug a Cop Day” you should never attempt to hug one! They’re more likely to tase you, club you, knock you to the ground, jam a jackboot on your neck and handcuff your hands behind your back than to hug you back! Sort of like tiger-loving Roy of Siegfried and Roy getting mauled by a tiger.
