Thousands of dogs were saved from slaughter thanks to a documentary featuring images and video from the annual dog meat festival in Yulin, China. Chinese activists were spurred into action and began protesting after more dark secretes were uncovered in the eye-opening film.
The Hong Kong businessman, artist, and animal rights activist known as Grenlin directed a documentary called “Eating Happiness” that captures the inspiring work of activists in China who are trying to end the dog meat trade. The documentary doesn’t just target China. Vietnam and South Korea are also featured in the documentary because that is where many dogs are farmed for their meat.
Gremlin’s film has been shown in select theaters in Italy, the United Kingdom, and Canada (where it may have a spot in the Toronto International Film Festival). Already, people in China are beginning to see how awful the dog meat trade truly is. The Yulin Dog Meat Festival, once a prized tradition in China, is now being held under more scrutiny and causing Yulin citizens to question the practice.
This documentary is doing so much more than simply pushing people to protest. It is creating awareness and causing the government to listen to what people are saying about the horrible slaughter of dogs for meat consumption. This will hopefully bring about the change that many have long fought for. Many people in China love their pets and the pet culture is only growing stronger. With reports of pets being kidnapped for their meat in the news, more citizens are calling for an end to the dog meat trade.
Mr. Grenlin has helped propel this movement even further and this allows us to get closer to the change we need to completely eradicate the dog meat trade. Please sign the petition below to thank him for his hard work on his documentary that features the horror behind the dog meat trade.
