NYPD Lieutenant Joanne Naughton (Ret.), Law Enforcement Against
Prohibition (L.E.A.P.) join Thom. Billionaire businessman Sir Richard
Branson made a post on his Virgin blog praising the UN for an alleged
leaked document from the United Nations Office On Drugs and Crime. The
Document seemed to outline a call for the international community to
decriminalize drug use and possession for personal consumption – and
further to start treating drug issues as a public health issue. And that
would be great news! Except that the UN chiefs in Vienna quickly
contested the document and asserted that it does not amount to official
policy. Meanwhile – the UNODC itself is not refuting the paper – but it
is claiming that people are misunderstanding the nature of the brief
that Branson posted – and that the brief is a working document – not a
final or formal document. So it doesn’t seem like this will be official
international policy anytime in the very near future – but it does give
hope for an end to the global war on drugs – and for a new approach to
how the global community approaches drug issues.
