Jamar Clark was shot in the head by Minneapolis police in the early hours of Sunday morning. Multiple eye witnesses say he was handcuffed before he was killed. An impromptu gathering at the scene of his murder was quickly pushed back across the street and into their apartments. A few were even pepper sprayed. A video shows the aftermath of the shooting and dispatch audio has been released.
Monday night at around 7pm hundreds of people took over Interstate 94 and held it down for two hours. The assembly was so large multiple police agencies were called in to help with the protest. During the 2 hours that the protest shut down the Interstate in Minneapolis, the police claim numerous vehicles were damaged, a state trooper was punched in the face and the police were directing whatever traffic down an embankment, and issued 4 announcements of illegal assembly and ordered them to disperse. After the crowd refused to leave the Interstate, 51 people were arrested and charged with illegal assembly and pedestrian on the interstate. Both counts are misdemeanors. 43 adults and 8 juveniles were arrested.
“Every witness account I heard said he was handcuffed. Every witness account. Put a knee on him and shot in the head. That’s the account I’ve heard from young people, older people”
said Jason Sole, criminal justice chair for the Minneapolis NAACP.
Not only did angry community members and activist shut down the Interstate, the night the shooting happened another group went to the North Minneapolis police precinct and set up an overnight encampment. The protest continued with people beating drums and chanting for justice. Others went inside and occupied the waiting area, one lady came prepared to wait, she sat down and started knitting. At least 8 tents remained when the protests continued the next day.
“We’re still not moving until we get that footage,”
said Michael McDowell, a member of Black Lives Matter.
