A recent AP investigation revealed the horrendous working conditions of slaves in the shrimp industry in Thailand. A wide array of supermarkets and restaurants sell the shrimp peeled by migrant workers held against their will, including Whole Foods, Safeway, Red Lobster, and Olive Garden. It also appears in some pet foods. Consumers are urged to look for the Aquaculture Stewardship Council certification on seafood, and to demand ethical, sustainable, and legal shrimp from sellers. The higher cost of domestic and responsibly raised shrimp pays for the tastier, safer product. You can find a list of brands and retailers discovered selling the tainted shrimp here.
