…the Turks, of course. According to Qadri Jamil, one of the leaders of the opposition Syrian Popular Front for Change and Liberation, the temporary ceasefire in Syria is for the most part holding. But the main violator of the agreement thus far, he says, is the Turkish government:
The most serious violation of ceasefire is in the north of Syria on the border with Turkey. This is a violation of the ceasefire regime by Turkey. The rest are separate cases. The overall situation is fine.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is on record claiming that the ceasefire does not apply to Turkey if he feels the country is threatened. His actions make it clear that he intends to carry out his threats to keep firing into Syria.
With the text of the ceasefire agreement now enshrined in a UN Security Council resolution, it appears as if Turkey is wantonly violating the Security Council resolution by bombing Syrian Kurds. Will the UN Security Council members make an issue of these violations, or will Turkey continue to be allowed to violate Syria’s sovereignty and kill its citizens at will?
