(Before It's News)

The U.S. World War I Centennial Commission has selected a final design from 360 possible choices for the first National WWI Memorial at Pershing Park.

The winning design team of Joe Weishaar and Sabin Howard, won for their concept the “Weight of Sacrifice.”  When completed, the monument will have four panels and will span some 137 feet in length with each cubic foot of the memorial represents an American soldier lost in the war; 116,516 in all.

The memorial will cost an estimated $30-$35 million, collected from private donations, and is hoped to be unveiled on Veterans’ Day 2018, the 100th Anniversary of the end of the Great War.
