A former policeman in the Cleveland-area was sentenced to five years in prison for selling guns to felons, the Justice Department announced Monday.
Kevin Lumpkin, 29, of North Olmsted, Ohio, was convicted last year of selling a Hi-Point .45-caliber carbine and a Ruger .380 pistol on different occasions to people he knew to be convicted felons.
According to court documents, Lumpkin sold the guns to the individuals, who remain nameless, between 2011 and 2013, when he was an officer with the North Randall Police Department.
Lumpkin admitted to buying firearms that were later recovered at the felons’ home, but claimed that they had been stolen even though he never reported them stolen. Authorities were responding to a domestic violence dispute when they found the guns.
Investigators said Lumpkin knew the felons for some years before he ever provided them firearms. He often visited the home to play video games and at one point installed a security camera.
However, at some point there was a falling out, which led Lumpkin to discharge a firearm inside the home. Investigators pulled a bullet out of a wall inside the house and traced it to a firearm that belonged to Lumpkin, according to court documents.
