(Before It's News)
Many believe that there was a historical figure named Jesus–but that his arrest and subsequent crucifixion took him (and his followers) by surprise. The good news is, nothing takes God by surprise–and with regard to the arrest and crucifixion, all unfolded according to plan. Noted below are a few prophetic statements Jesus made about the cross and resurrection. The clarity of His statements should embolden our faith in the precision and integrity of the Word, and His redemptive plan.

A PARTIAL LISTING OF PROPHETIC STATEMENTS MADE BY JESUS CHRIST:
- John 2 (In Jerusalem at the first Passover): 18 The Jews then said to Him, “What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered… “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
- Matthew 16 (foretelling his death and resurrection): 21 From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.
- Matthew 12 (the demand for a sign): 38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” 39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet; 40 for just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly…so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
- Matthew 17 (following the transfiguration): 9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.”
- Mark 9 (in Galilee): 32b “…The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later.” 32 But they did not understand this statement…”
- Matthew 17 (while in Capernaum): 22 And while they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be [k]delivered into the hands of men; 23 and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day.” And they were deeply grieved.
- Luke 9 (at the feeding of the 5000): 22“…The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”
- Matthew 20 (while in Perea or Bethany): 18 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be [l]delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, 19 and will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and scourge and crucify Him, and on the third day He will be raised up.”
- Mark 10 (on the way to Jerusalem): 33b “…the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will [l]hand Him over to the Gentiles. 34 They will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again.”
- John 12 (the last week/in Jerusalem): 31 Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.” 33 But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die.
