- On Monday May 9, 2016 the tiny planet Mercury moved across the face of our brilliant star, the Sun – as seen from our perspective on Earth. This hasn’t happened in a decade, and is relatively rare – there are 13 per century. The next one is in 2019 (the next after that will be in 2032). It was a great opportunity for astronomers to study both Mercury and the Sun, so it was science-a-palooza!
From an astrological perspective, this is the mid-point of the Mercury Retrograde cycle when a MESSAGE – a moment of clarity with a packet of light and information – is transmitted to us from the Sun via the spunky little messenger. It’s a turning point and often contains the seed thoughtform of what Mercury Retrograde is revealing to us.
This isn’t your average Mercury-Sun meeting, however, because Mercury was directly IN-BETWEEN the Sun and Earth so that it could be seen moving across the scorching solar disk, a tiny black dot seemingly plowing through the surface of the Sun.
