ICANN & Jon Postel: Father of Internet Addresses Killed for Trying to Make the Internet Free? (video)
Jon Postel, the ‘God of the Internet’, died in 1998, just 9 months after redirecting nearly the entire internet away from the Federal Government, to his facility. In effect, he hijacked the internet back from the government. Though he worked for the government at this time, he was involved in negotiations to have the internet returned to the private sector.
Was Jon reacting to some backroom argument in which he was told the private sector turnover had been cancelled? We can only speculate. What we do know is that Network Solutions had the market during the early internet days to handle all pay-per-click transactions and internet address control. And, this company was the one that Jon hijacked control of the internet from shortly after they began charging every internet address $100 for their domain name. Does this sound familiar? It should. The control of the internet was recently turned over to ICANN.
