Rats in a Cube: The “Beautiful Ones” Explained (video)
When Prince wrote The Beautiful Ones, what was he really saying about ‘painting a perfect picture, a vision in one’s mind’? Did he know that in the very year he was born, 1958, an experiment was underway with 4 pairs of rats, in which a utopian colony was set free within a cube to see how they would thrive with all the resources necessary for survival? There was one problem with the experiment. The rats did not thrive. ‘The Beautiful Ones’, a term coined by the creator of the experiment, Calhoun, was the end result; a class of effeminate, homosexual, rats who’s only care was self grooming, eating and sleeping. Reproduction ceased in the colony and the population dwindled into oblivion. The perfect picture, the vision in one’s mind, was in fact the rat in a cube experiment.
This is what happens when you take any creature outside their natural environment and confine them to a cube, no matter how many resources for survival you provide for them. The interesting thing about this bizarre coincidence connecting Prince and Calhoun’s Beautiful Ones is that Prince ended up becoming the epitome of Calhoun’s experiments!
