Video released of encounter where Chicago cop feared backlash, refused to shoot suspect (VIDEO)
Dash and body cam footage was released Friday that showed an encounter that occurred earlier this month when a female Chicago police officer who was being brutally beaten refused to shoot the suspect out of fear of the backlash that would follow.
“She knew that she should shoot this guy,” Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said last week following the incident. “But she chose not to because she didn’t want her family — or the department — to have to go through the scrutiny the next day.”
Ironically, the body cam footage also captured someone making the comment, “A couple months ago you could have shot him,” referring to the suspect.
Officers were first called to the scene after Parta Huff, 28, slammed his vehicle into a liquor store. As officers arrived, things quickly went downhill as Huff, who was later determined to be high on PCP, refused to comply with commands and fought with officers as they attempted to detain him.
In the video, Huff is seen throwing the female officer to the ground with such force that she was knocked unconscious. The officer’s body lay completely limp as other officers continued to fight with Huff, who was tazed multiple times. The Tazer appeared to have no effect on Huff, and finally, with the help of several officers, he was restrained and taken into custody. Altogether, three officers were injured while attempting to subdue Huff, and as of Friday, the female officer remained hospitalized.
Huff faces charges for attempted murder of a police officer and aggravated battery to a police officer. He remains in jail without bond.
