LGBTQ gun rights group offers firearm training to Orlando community
National LGBTQ gun rights group the Pink Pistols have started to offer firearms training classes to Orlando’s LGBTQ community.
WESH – NBC News reports the classes are held once a month and are located at the Global Dynasty Corps gunshop, offering many attendees an opportunity to abide by the groups motto, “armed gays don’t get bashed.”
“The thought of me holding a gun is terrifying,” said student Diana Georgey, who was motivated to take the class after the Pulse nightclub massacre.
“It affected me in a way that I felt like I can’t ever go anywhere and be safe,” said Georgey.
NRA instructor Jo Martin, who is not a member of the LGBTQ community, founded the Central Florida chapter of the Pink Pistols when some former students inquired about it after the shootings at Pulse.
Many called for greater gun control after the Pulse massacre, but the Pink Pistols think carrying guns would make them less of a target.
In statement released after the Pulse shooting, First Speaker of the Pink Pistols Gwendolyn Patton said that gun control was not the answer and instead called for the allowance of designated carriers in areas where alcohol was served.
“This is exactly the kind of heinous act that justifies our existence,” Patton said. “At such a time of tragedy, let us not reach for the low-hanging fruit of blaming the killer’s guns. Let us stay focused on the fact that someone hated gay people so much they were ready to kill or injure so many.”
“It is difficult, if not impossible, to foresee such an event,” Patton continued. “But if they cannot be prevented, then they must be stopped as fast as someone tries to start them.”
