A man with a large metal pipe was shot and killed by an LAPD officer Saturday afternoon outside of a busy restaurant.
The incident apparently started as some sort of altercation between two men but quickly escalated.
Clara Rios, who owns a nearby business, said she regularly sees the now-deceased man on the street, but according to LAPD Detective Meghan Aguilar, someone was concerned enough with the man’s actions that day to call 911.
When police arrived on the scene, they found the man with a metal pipe about 4-to-5-feet long. The man was repeatedly asked to put down the pipe and when he continually refused, one officer attempted to taze the man, which had no effect on him. A second officer then fired two shots from his service weapon, striking the man.
The incident, which was captured by several witnesses on cell phone video, remains under investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with additional footage to come forward.
