Although the comment was not made in jest, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer was forced to walk back claims made by presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway that microwave ovens with cameras can be used to spy on people.

Conway made the comments in a recent interview:

When asked for clarification during a press briefing, Spicer walked that comment back, saying,

The microwave is not a sound way of surveilling someone. I think that has been cleaned up. It was made in jest, so, I think we can put that to rest.

The media has lambasted Conway ever since the comments were made, specifically making a huge big deal out of the fact that she mentioned microwaves, but totally ignoring the fact that recent Wikileaks revelations have revealed that the CIA is using exploits to turn household devices linked to the Internet into covert surveillance tools, remotely activating the microphones on televisions, gaming systems, and other systems like the Amazon Echo or Google Home without the knowledge of the owner.

While the media argues over whether or not Trump is under surveillance, they are distracting people from the fact that, by default of these revelations, all of us are under surveillance.

Besides, back during an interview on the campaign trail, Donald Trump said he was pro-Patriot Act and surveillance state anyway. “I assume when I pick up my telephone people are listening to my conversations anyway if you wanna know the truth… it’s pretty sad commentary,” Trump said.
