Cat Hoarder Grandfather Charged With Child Endangerment
John Ed Howe, 69, of Santa Ana, Calif., was charged with child endangerment for keeping more than 100 cats in a house with four other adults and two children, according to the Orange County Register. Howe plead guilty to the charge after his home was found to be filled with urine, feces, flies, cockroaches and feral cats, leading to extremely unsanitary conditions for the residents, including the children.
Officials first became aware of the problem when neighbors complained about the foul smell coming from Howe’s house. Police officers arrived at the home wearing gas masks to protect themselves from the stench, but were forced to leave when the smell proved too overwhelming, making the officers sick. They returned wearing full hazmat gear in order to enter the residence.
110 cats were captured, almost all of them in varying degrees of poor shape. More than 20 had to be euthanized. Half had upper respiratory infections. A quarter had ear mites. A quarter were covered in urine and feces. All of them had fleas.
Under his plea bargain, Howe was sentenced to three years probation. He is now living alone, and probation officials will visit Howe monthly to ensure he maintaining sanitary conditions. Howe is allowed visits from the children.
