SIFAKA EMPRESS
The Duke Lemur Center is celebrating the birth of a new sifaka. Her name is Beatrice of Swabia, and she was born to mother Rodelinda, and father Marcus. Beatrice has a sister named Bertha of Sulzbach. All of the Duke Lemur Center’s sifakas are named for Roman emperors.

Three meerkats were born at the Dartmoor Zoological Park in the U.K. just before Christmas. Their mother, Xena, and father, Timon, have been enjoying a helping hand from Sue, another female meerkat and experienced mother who has proved herself eager to help out with motherly duties.

Lots of newborns are giving zoos cause for celebration, but the old timers like to party too. Tricia the elephant recently celebrated her 56th birthday at Perth Zoo in Australia, where she has been a favorite of zoogoers for many years.
The Aukland Zoo has spent the past month caring for a precious newborn Nepalese red panda. And we mean “precious” in both senses of the word: this little fellow is both adorable and very rare. There are only about 2,500 of these animals remaining in the wild.
