Get this: A real-life “Jaws” off the Hamptons was sighted Wednesday. A great white shark, named Mary Lee, was tracked near South Fork shoreline by OCEARCH. While shark sightings are rare in this area, experts say the Steven Spielberg-inspired fish is no threat to humans at this time.
The great white then made her way down the coast towards St. Augustine, Fla. around Jan. 9. From there, the real-life “Jaws” shark made her way back towards the Hamptons after cruising past the Carolinas.
As of today, Mary Lee (in this photo) was located about 45-nautical miles off the coast of Montauk Point. And by all accounts, she is heading away from shore.
I didn’t know they could tolerate chilly water temps like this. The buoy Station 44017 23 Nautical Miles Southwest of Montauk Point, NY is reporting a water temperature of 43 degrees. When I saw one a few years ago while shark fishing the water was a warm 72 degrees .
If anyone is swimming or diving in Southhampton this time of year they have lost their mind! We have bigger things to worry about!
