8 Million Bats Flock Together in World’s Largest Mammalian Migration

Burrard-Lucas, 29, saw the millions of straw-coloured fruit bats leaving their trees at sundown to hunt, then returning to the trees at dawn. Each tree holds 10 tons of bats, which is the highest density mass of warm-blooded mammals on the planet, and all of them confining themselves to just one acre at the park.
That’s not the only impressive record these bats are setting. The African wildebeest migration, with its 1.5 million wildebeests is often said to be the largest mammalian migration in the world. But in fact, that’s only the largest mammalian migration on the ground. These eight million bats outdo the wildebeests by quite a bit.
Said Burrard-Lucas, “In some of my pictures the bats are so dense that you can barely see the sky behind them.”
A word to the wise: Don’t hang around Kasanka National Park at dawn or dusk if you have a fear of bats. It won’t go well for you.
