Guard dogs are so passé. It’s all about security bunnies now. According to The (U.K.) Telegraph, an English family believes their large pet rabbit scared off an intruder burglarizing their home.
While the rest of the family slept, Toby the rabbit was awoken by someone entering the house and rifling though the cupboards. In reaction to this unexpected guest, the 2-foot-long rabbit began loudly thumping his feet against the ground. Scared that they had been spotted, the robber or robbers fled.
“We went to bed on Wednesday at about 10 p.m. In the early hours of the morning, Toby, our rabbit, did five loud thumps. I sort of half woke up then realized he’d stopped and went back to sleep,” Toby’s owner Kimberley May shared with The Telegraph. “When I went downstairs every single cupboard and drawer were open, there were bits out everywhere, then we started noticing things were missing and we phoned the police.”
May is sure her heroic rabbit is the one who stopped the burglary from going any further. A clump of belongings were found abandoned on the couch, which makes officials believe the thief left before they could collect everything.
Sadly, the criminal still made off with some valuables, including May’s handbag, laptop and her father’s war medal. May’s wedding invitations for her upcoming nuptials also were taken.
Toby is unharmed from his brush with crime, but noticeably shaken up. May says the large bunny is friendly, but has been unusually anti-social after the incident.
“He’s playful, really friendly, and he doesn’t mind my three-year-old crawling all over him. He’s like a small dog really,” May told The Telegraph. “He has the run of the house and at night he goes in a dog’s crate. It’s a Labrador-sized cage. When he thumps on the floor it’s incredibly loud – you can hear it echoing around the house.”
While May is upset by what was lost during the burglary, she is certain that the theft would have been worse if Toby wasn’t around. The rabbit’s loud thumps prevented the robber from going upstairs where May and her 3-year-old daughter were resting, allowing everyone to get through the incident unharmed. Police are currently trying to apprehend the burglar and hope to return May’s valuables.
