Pundits on both sides of the political aisle began the week by reacting to Hillary Clinton’s long-awaited announcement that she is a presidential candidate. As the first Democrat to make such a commitment ahead of the 2016 election cycle, a particularly relevant response came from her counterpart in the Republican Party: Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
Cruz, who became the first to announce his intention to seek the GOP nomination last month, issued a press release offering his insights into a fledgling Hillary Clinton campaign.
He began by asserting that “we’re ready for Hillary” and “we know what to expect,” citing his belief that she would merely extend the damaging policies enacted during Barack Obama’s two terms.
“Hillary Clinton represents the failed policies of the past,” he indicated, “and there’s going to be a very clear choice to make in 2016. Does America want a third Obama term or are we ready for strong conservative leadership to make America great again?”
Cruz predicted that, if elected, hers would be an administration “no different than an Obama administration,” insisting that controversial issues including healthcare, gun control, and immigration would operate in the same vein as during the previous eight years.
“Her announcement raises a critical question: Is the world a safer place because Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State?” he added. “The answer is obvious. No.”
Under her influence, he said, “we have witnessed the rise of Russia, Iran, and ISIS” on a global scale while, within the U.S., “the Obama-Clinton economic policies have made life harder and harder for millions of hard-working Americans.”
