Our president is keen to reduce America’s nuclear arsenal. This is a fact established by his words and deeds. Reducing nuclear weapons levels is an admirable goal IF other nations are following suit and complying with their own treaty obligations.
America is rapidly reducing her nuclear weapons under the START treaty of 2010, completed under President Obama’s watch. Meanwhile, Russia has reduced her stockpiles as well but is actively not complying with the INF treaty or Intermediate Range Nuclear forces treaty. Efforts to get Russia to comply have not been successful.
China also is rapidly increasing its own nuclear forces across the board.
Russia is also rapidly modernizing its nuclear arsenal, while America’s nuclear force rusts in its silos with no modernization attempted in several decades.
Our enemies sense weakness and an opportunity to eventually intimidate the United States.
Bill Gertz of the Washington Free Beacon writes:
Despite nuclear saber-rattling by Moscow, U.S. nuclear forces are close to reaching warhead, missile, and bomber numerical cuts required under the 2010 New START arms treaty, a senior Pentagon official told Congress on Wednesday.
“We are confronted with Russia’s occupation and attempted annexation of Crimea, continuing aggressive Russian actions in eastern Ukraine, Russia’s increasingly aggressive nuclear posturing and threats, including the prospect of nuclear weapons in Crimea, and its violation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty,” he added.
Scher was pressed by subcommittee members to say when the administration will take steps to counter the INF violation, which officials have described as deployment of a new Iskander cruise missile.
Efforts to convince the Russians to return to INF treaty compliance so far have been unsuccessful. Scher said several options are being examined to counter the INF violation.
China also is engaged in a major strategic nuclear buildup and has so far refused to engage the United States in talks about its forces.
Is it just me,or does it seem like we are being played? Our adversaries are quite happy to allow us to continue to reduce American global power. President Obama is hellbent on enshrining American military weakness as his legacy.
I hope a new Ronald Reagan is waiting in the wings.
