Hillary Attacked From The Left: Gov. O’Malley Brands Her Flip-Flopper
While some pundits continue to treat Hillary Clinton’s presidential nomination as a foregone conclusion, at least a few Democrats are poised to put up a primary fight. One of the names bandied about as a potential Hillary crusher is Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, a politician who seemed up for the task in a recent conversation with reporters.
He criticized the former secretary of state for her previous views on a number of issues, primarily because he felt she was too far to the right. The fact that she has since revised her positions to align themselves with the leftist Democrat platform, O’Malley contended, was simply evidence of her willingness to vacillate.
“I’m glad Secretary Clinton’s come around to the right positions on these issues,” he said, referring specifically to immigration and marriage reform.
O’Malley posited that it took her so long to change her position because she was more interested in pleasing potential voters than expressing an unpopular opinion.
“I believe that we are best as a party when we lead with our principles and not according to the polls,” he said. “And every election is about the future. And leadership is about making the right decision — and the best decision — before sometimes it becomes entirely popular.”
For good measure, O’Malley clarified his own views regarding the two issues.
“I believe marriage is a human right,” he said in support of gay marriage, “not a state right. I’m glad she’s come around to that position as well.”
As for providing driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, O’Malley asserted that he thinks “we do our country a disservice when we make it harder for new American immigrants to abide by the rules of the road and obtain driver’s licenses.”
