2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton supports driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants. A lack of consistency on the issue contributed to her campaign’s downfall in 2008.
“Hillary supports state policies to provide driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants,” a Clinton spokesperson told The Huffington Post. During her last presidential campaign, the former senator from New York was not so clear.
In a 2007 Democratic presidential primary debate, the late Tim Russert asked Clinton if she supported then-New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s (D) proposal to issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants in the Empire State. This was her ultimate response:
You know, Tim, this is where everybody plays ‘gotcha.’ It makes a lot of sense. What is the governor supposed to do? He is dealing with a serious problems. We have failed. And George Bush has failed.
Do I think this is the best thing for any governor to do? No. But do I understand the sense of real desperation, trying to get a handle on this?
Remember, in New York, we want to know who’s in New York. We want people to come out of the shadows. He’s making an honest effort to do it. We should have passed immigration reform.
Clinton later supported Spitzer’s decision to withdraw the proposal and said she would not support such a measure as president, The New York Times reported at the time.
“As president, I will not support driver’s licenses for undocumented people and will press for comprehensive immigration reform that deals with all of the issues around illegal immigration, including border security and fixing our broken system,” Clinton said in a statement.
Former Gov. Martin O’Malley of Maryland, who could be one of the biggest hurdles Clinton may have to overcome in this election cycle during the Democratic primary, has long been a proponent of issuing driver’s licenses to illegal aliens. As reporter Daniel Halper noted, “It would appear the front-running Democratic candidate is doing her best to adopt the positions of her chief rival.”
